PETALING JAYA, 11 June 2026 – As excitement builds for the World Cup 2026, CelcomDigi is stepping up its network readiness to ensure Malaysians can enjoy uninterrupted connectivity while following every match. Anticipating a significant surge in mobile data usage during the tournament, the telecommunications provider has introduced a series of proactive measures aimed at delivering a smooth streaming experience for customers watching matches through the RTMKlik app, whether at home or on the move.
With millions of football fans expected to stream live matches, engage on social media and share real-time content, mobile data traffic is projected to rise sharply throughout the tournament. Recognising that the 2026 edition is expected to be one of the most digitally connected World Cups yet, CelcomDigi is focusing on maintaining network stability and delivering a consistent user experience across the country.
According to CelcomDigi Chief Technology Officer Kesavan Sivabalan, digital connectivity has become an essential part of how fans experience major sporting events today. As more viewers rely on smartphones, tablets and smart devices to stream matches instead of traditional television broadcasts, ensuring a reliable and high-quality network has become increasingly important.
To prepare for the anticipated increase in network demand, CelcomDigi's 24-hour Network Operations Centre (NOC) will continuously monitor network performance throughout the tournament. Supported by network engineers and technical partners, the team will oversee more than 18,000 network sites nationwide while ensuring the company's core infrastructure remains resilient during peak viewing hours.
The company has also leveraged predictive analytics and data modelling to align network planning with the World Cup match schedule and expected customer behaviour. This includes pre-emptive capacity planning, network optimisation during match periods, and targeted upgrades at locations expected to experience higher mobile traffic, including residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and public viewing venues.
To further strengthen network performance, CelcomDigi has deployed additional mobile base stations in strategic locations while enhancing coverage and capacity management across high-demand areas. Around-the-clock monitoring and rapid response protocols have also been put in place to quickly address any network issues and maintain uninterrupted service throughout the competition.
Beyond local connectivity, CelcomDigi has enhanced its international roaming services for customers travelling overseas during the tournament. With roaming coverage across more than 120 countries, Malaysians can continue streaming matches, accessing online content and staying connected with family and friends regardless of where they are watching the games.
Kesavan emphasised that careful preparation plays a vital role in maintaining service quality during periods of exceptionally high network demand. He noted that CelcomDigi will continue investing in its network infrastructure and technological capabilities to ensure customers receive reliable connectivity throughout the month-long football spectacle.
Currently, CelcomDigi operates one of Malaysia's broadest mobile networks, covering approximately 97 per cent of populated areas nationwide. The company continues to expand and strengthen its infrastructure to support increasing data consumption as more consumers embrace digital services and online entertainment.
To make the tournament even more accessible, CelcomDigi is also offering customers a special Unlimited Internet Pass priced at RM10. The pass provides unlimited internet access from 12.00 am to 12.00 pm for seven consecutive days. In addition, customers subscribing from 8 June 2026 onwards can enjoy exclusive all-day unlimited internet specifically for streaming matches via the RTMKlik app, allowing fans to catch every moment of the World Cup without worrying about data limits.
As football fever sweeps across the nation, CelcomDigi's network preparations demonstrate the growing importance of reliable digital connectivity in today's sports viewing experience. Whether cheering from home, commuting or travelling overseas, Malaysians can stay connected to every goal, celebration and unforgettable moment throughout World Cup 2026.
